![About  The Oxford Review is conceived in the spirit of the literary salon. One should consider it a place, whether real or imagined, in which writers, critics, poets, artists, scientists, and serious readers gather around language, judgment, beauty, wit, and argument. We are interested in literature not as mere content, but as conversation conducted with intelligence, style, and consequence.  We subscribe to the idea of gaiety, wit and satire that all great and longstanding magazines and literary journals were built upon. We intend to fuse the influence of British wit and clever quips with the stark observations and candour which only the US can deliver unapologetically.  We are building The Oxford Review as a serious, elegant literary journal with an international outlook, publishing fiction, nonfiction, essays, criticism, and other work of literary merit. Our aim is to create a journal that feels intellectually alive, teeming with honour, decency and social respectability like that of Hôtel de Rambouillet’s French salon, beautifully curated, and worthy of long-term attention.  As for any questions about who is running the magazine, our masthead at The Oxford Review offers the best introduction. You will find that our team consists of renowned writers, directors and artists who are not only distinguished in the literary and artistic world, but many were educated at Oxford, Harvard, or both.  The Oxford Review is drawn to art with lineage: the sinuous elegance of Art Nouveau, the symbolic intensity of the pre-Raphaelites, Golden Age Illustrations, Bella Époque Satire, Early Modernist, 20’s Commercial Art, Edwardian, Urban Street Portraiture Art and the unsettling sweetness of the modern Surrealists.  We are not looking for decoration alone. We would like images with unexpected juxtapositions, atmosphere, and a monocle focus. One’s work should arrest the eye, carry emotional theme, whisper of a golden age, and linger after the page has turned.  The Oxford Review will publish quarterly as a digital issue, select pieces will run regularly on our social media and website and few debut authors will be reserved for our carefully curated seasonal print editions.  Our inaugural US issue will bring together fiction, poetry, essays, criticism, and selected excerpts from writers of literary distinction and strong voice. We are looking for work that has life in it: work with pressure, elegance, nerve, and imaginative force. Bella Kántor is a reader on the masthead of both Ploughshares and The Harvard Review. She has worked in the television industry writing scenes for In the Pits with Devlin Mann of Suddenly Susan and has successfully pitched and landed two television series with production companies such as Matador and 44 Blue. Bella studied at Harvard for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees, where she focused on literature and creative writing. She is also scheduled to begin guest lecturing on psychopathology in creative writing at Harvard. Bella Kántor Editor

Janeen Wright is The Oxford Review’s non-fiction editor. She holds a BFA in journalism. Janeen also holds a graduate degree in Creative Writing and Literature from Harvard University. In addition to Janeen’s many talents she is also a reader on the masthead of The Harvard Review and has worked closely with our editor in roundtable discussions at Harvard University.

Louise Walker is a poet based in London. After graduating from Magdalen College, Oxford with a degree in English Literature, she trained as a teacher, then spent 35 years in secondary schools educating girls. Louise’s debut collection FROM THERE TO HERE was published by Dithering Chaps in 2024; since then she has been touring with it to arts events around the UK, including the Huddersfield Literary Festival and the Lambeth Readers and Writers Festival. She has a particular interest in reading her work in community libraries. Her poems have appeared in anthologies by the Sycamore Press and Emma Press, as well as a wide range of journals, such as Oxford Magazine, Acumen and Pennine Platform. She has been recognised by The Frosted Fire Firsts Award, The Bedford Competition, The Alchemy Spoon Pamphlet Competition and The Ironbridge Poetry Competition. She enjoys collaborating: commissions include Bampton Classical Opera and Gill Wing Jewellery for their showcase ‘Poetry in Ocean’. Louise continues to work with young people, inspiring them to share her life-long passion for poetry. For the last 7 years, she has been learning the flute and is currently studying Handel sonatas.

Blub is an anonymous Italian street artist from Florence, best known for the series “L’Arte Sa Nuotare” (Art Knows How to Swim). Active since 2013, they reimagine iconic historical and artistic figures—like Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Michelangelo’s David—wearing bright blue diving masks and breathing underwater. Blub’s work first emerged in 2013 in Cadaqués, Catalonia, then on the streets of Florence, and has since appeared in cities across Europe. Blub’s art has been featured in prominent exhibitions, including a major solo show at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (2019). BLUB means art that can swim. It’s a reminder that even in difficult times we can choose courage, creativity, and hope. Renaissance icons in diving masks, Blub’s work blends the past with the present to show that art can help us rise, breathe, and keep moving forward. My Dog Sighs is an internationally acclaimed street artist who has spent more than 20 years honing his craft on streets across the globe. Beginning with his Free Art Friday project, his practice has evolved to encompass street interventions, murals across five continents, major museum commissions and groundbreaking immersive installations that push the boundaries of contemporary urban art. Widely regarded as a key figure in the urban art movement, My Dog Sighs continues to redefine how art is experienced in public space, with The Guardian naming him a “British street artist you should know.”

Antonio Lorente is a Spanish illustrator born in July 1987 who has a knack for transforming stories into experiences that captivate readers of all ages. With a style that blends traditional techniques such as oil and watercolor with digital art, his works are full of life and emotion, transporting us to worlds brimming with color, mystery, and beauty. His passion for telling stories through images makes him more than just an illustrator: he is a creator of universes, a bridge between literature and visual art, and a constant source of inspiration for those who love to daydream. With Antonio Lorente, every illustration tells a story, and every book is a gem. From 2005 to 2010, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Polytechnic University of Valencia. He settled in Portugal and the United Kingdom, where he continued to develop his career and style. He specialized in 2D animation but decided to leave that field to work with still images, character design, and background art. In 2012, he held his first solo exhibition at the Casa del Cine in his hometown, and in the following years, his work, alongside that of other illustrators, was exhibited at the National Library of Spain and in galleries across the United Kingdom, the United States, and Italy. He has created some of his illustrated books in collaboration with his sister, the writer María Jesús Lorente: La princesa Aburrida in 2016, Yago (2017), and Genios: El eco fantasma de sus voces (2018), a book supported by a grant from EmprendeDiseño at Factoría Cultural in Matadero, Madrid. In 2019, he produced a full-length version of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and Peter Pan and Wendy, using the original text by James Barrie. In 2020, his adaptation of the classic Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery entered the bestseller list, with over 60,000 copies sold in a year.

This is a space where writers and authors can solicit direct answers about submitting your short stories and poems to Literary Journals and Literary Agents. 

In this video, we cover everything from how to prepare for a pitch event, what they are looking for, word counts, genres that are in, genres that are out and how you can be more successful. 

In a world where rejection feels like a personal affront and the person to whom you have queried has become an apparition, there are options. Where do you turn when everyone has their hand out for money?

### A Lyric That Lingers—Unforgettable Poetry by Louise Walker, Poetry Editor

Among the vibrant images of David Hockney’s work that are being shared everywhere in the wake of his death, a print caught my eye. In his trademark cobalt and mint, he declares: ‘They say you need 3 things for PAINTING: the HAND, the EYE, the HEART. Two won’t do’.

I’m certain I look for all three when reading a poem for the first time: technique, vision and emotional impact.

Some poems hit the sweet spot and seem effortless, concealing the crafting and re-drafting, those hours spent tweaking line-endings, trimming away the fat and searching for the perfect image for the last line.

The poems that appeal to me work both on the page and in performance. After all, poetry has its origins in song and the oral storytelling tradition found in every culture, so it has always needed to be memorable. I like Don Paterson’s phrase ‘the lyric weave’ for the way a poem creates a sound world that reinforces the effects of the language and imagery the poet has chosen.

Poetry can use all the senses, of course, and I love poems that create vivid, individual worlds. Sometimes a couple of brand names like Weetabix or Horlicks can evoke a time or place so powerfully, whilst a mundane object, such as a battered frying pan, can bring a person or relationship to life right before our eyes.

I’m always ready to be surprised/amused/haunted/shocked/moved by a poem. Perhaps even all at the same time! But I want to feel the poem is authentic. Grandiose philosophical pronouncements don’t interest me at all.

Whether you are submitting nonfiction, fiction, commentary, satire, poetry, a literary-leaning scientific paper or even a spirited but well-argued letter to the Editor, *The Oxford Review* will have a keen eye for anything in the vein of

We welcome a sharp wit or mercurial tongue, provided it delivers a cogent argument.

Please avoid ad hominem attacks, and remember that introducing logical fallacies is like throwing frankfurters at a charging lion.
